Friday Holyoke Fix: Holyoke Merry Go Round + Cans for Comments

**For every comment left on Holyoke Home posts from December 7th-December 31st 2010, we will donate one canned good or non-perishable item to local hero Kate's Kitchen.  We're up to 90 comments so far! Keep up the good work by leaving a comment!**

Lucky, lucky Holyoke.  Our fair city operates a beautiful, colorful, and musical Merry-Go-Round downtown, next to the Children's Museum. Holyoke is also home to amazing local photographers. And I am lucky enough to feature one of them today.  Peter Palombella, sometimes better known by his online handle VanDog, is a photographer and blogger in Holyoke covering local events. From politics to arts and culture, Peter is usually on the scene. More of Peter's lovely images can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ramblingvandog/sets/72157625524582234/

I am blown away by these images every time I look at them. Their beauty continues to stun me.

  1. Cool photos!

Hey I have a question about your fair town...is it pronounced "Holy-oke" or "Hol-yoke". It may be a dumb question...but I was just wondering! :P

  2. We love the carousel! It's a great affordable place for parties, too.
Thanks for organizing the charity event!

  3. Hey Becky! Such a great question! Locals pronounce our fair city 'Whole-yolk'.

It's as if the 'y' isn't even there!

  4. Finally, something in my fair city I AM familiar with!! What beautiful shots he took of it too!!...By the way, I'm a transplanted Holyoke resident, from Georgia, and I always pronounce it "Ho-Lee-yoke". Goes to show accents make all the difference! LOL

  5. Love the pics and I love merry-go-rounds. We have a carousel park with a really old merry-go-round in it and they have birthday parties there and it's a ton of fun. The first pic reminds me of my life right now...time is flying by in a blur and I'm one of the bystanders!

  8. ... ugh... love it so much. Reminds me of when I was a kid in Marthas Vineyard on the Flying Horses... (We were there before it was too ritzy for us common folk... Yeah that's right Chelsea Clinton! You weren't the first kid on the island!)

  11. I live around the corner from where the late Mr. Hickey lived. He's the one who saved the Merry Go Round from destruction (in the 90's?) and had it restored to its original grandeur. He was so very proud of the project - I know he'd be happy to know it's still being enjoyed!
