Just Like That Simon and Garfunkel Song

*Every Friday through the fall, Holyoke Home is sharing images from our weekly farm share at Mountain View Farm. I hope you enjoy seeing what the farm has to offer.*
Sing it with me! "Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.....la la la, to the ones who go there, la la la la la, she once was a true love of mine...." What kind of fruitcake sings a folk song about HERBS?! Uh. Call me a fruitcake.

As if veggies and flowers 'a plenty weren't enough, Mountain View has lots and lots of fresh herbs to pick every week. That's dill in the photo above, and basil (regular on the left and Opal basil on the right) below.

In addition to the regular uses (flavoring marinades, etc.) we've been adding chopped up or hand-torn herbs to our salads and really enjoying them, particularly oregano, basil, and parsley.

Do you include herbs in your summer menus? How do you use them?

  1. Hey! Who you calling a fruitcake?!...I love that song!!! ^_^ And I love these beautiful photos too. I eat herbs as often as I can, but I don't grow my own. And I don't buy them much. The 'Take-Out' restaurants do just fine though, and I frequent them for my herb inspired meals!!! ^_^ I eat my broccoli, asparagus, collards and green beans without herbs. Ha! Ha!

  3. Yum, I love fresh herbs and despite the fact that they do not do well on my north-facing apartment balcony I do attempt to grow some every year: parsley, basil and cilantro. I also like them in salads but also snip them up and add just before serving to some sauteed chicken and wine over rice. Fresh basil crushed in lemonade is refreshing. Also delicious: fresh basil and parsley, S&P mixed in soft butter and spread on a baguette (warm or room temp). Mmmmmm....

  4. Back when that song was popular and I was but a mere child...cough...cough...many people were into "herbs", but not putting them on their salads. Although I think some used them in brownies..anyway, as a Greek girl I do use fresh mint in many recipes...all those rows of herbs look so nice and I can just imagine how wonderful they smell!

  5. Love that song - now it's stuck in my head. ;)

    LOL at yaya!

Beautiful garden! We've unfortunately obviously opened a salad buffet for the neighborhood groundhogs. :( Boo! However, the herbs are located right outside of our kitchen door and they're okay. My husband does the cooking, mostly grilling during the summer and everything from salmon with mango salsa and tandori chicken include an herb of some sort. ;) I couldn't tell you personally what and where, only that it's delicious!
